DESCRIPTION:Dario Villamaina\, post-doc LPTMS\nI will present some recent a
 pplications of non-equilibrium fluctuation theory to one-dimensional diffu
 sive models.\nSpontaneous Symmetry Breaking at the Fluctuating Level (Phys
 . Rev. Lett. 107\, 180601 (2011) )\nhttp://prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v107/i
 18/e180601\nAbstract: Phase transitions not allowed in equilibrium steady 
 states may happen\, however\, at the fluctuating level. We observe for the
  first time this striking and general phenomenon measuring current fluctua
 tions in an isolated diffusive system. While small fluctuations result fro
 m the sum of weakly correlated local events\, for currents above a critica
 l threshold the system self-organizes into a coherent traveling wave which
  facilitates the current deviation by gathering energy in a localized pack
 et\, thus breaking translation invariance. This results in Gaussian statis
 tics for small fluctuations but non-Gaussian tails above the critical curr
 ent. Our observations\, which agree with predictions derived from hydrodyn
 amic fluctuation theory\, strongly suggest that rare events are genericall
 y associated with coherent\, self-organized patterns which enhance their p
 robability.\n&nbsp\;
