SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar : Abdul Barakat - Moyen Amphi\, B
 uilding 510\, Université Paris-Saclay Orsay - 28 Juin 13 14:00
DESCRIPTION:Mechanotransduction in Vascular Endothelial Cells: Mechanisms a
nd Implications\nAbdul Barakat (École Polytechnique)\nThe ability of arte
rial endothelial cells\, the cells lining the inner surfaces of blood vess
els\, to respond to mechanical forces associated with blood flow is essent
ial for normal vascular function. Abnormalities in endothelial cell mechan
otransduction play a critical role in the development and progression of c
ardiovascular disease. The mechanisms governing how endothelial cells sens
e mechanical forces on their surfaces and how they subsequently transmit t
hese forces within the intracellular space remain poorly understood. In th
is talk\, I will present experimental and computational results in support
of a central role for the cellular cytoskeleton in force transmission wit
hin endothelial cells. Because endothelial cells are often simultaneously
exposed to multiple biophysical stimuli\, I will show data that demonstrat
e that endothelial cells integrate biophysical stimuli derived from simult
aneous apical cellular stimulation by flow and basal stimulation by nano-s
cale substrate patterning. Finally\, I will discuss the role of proteins t
hat link the cytoskeleton to the nucleus in modulating mechanotransduction
  in endothelial cells.
