SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar: Aleksandra Walczak - LPTMS\, sal
 le 201\, 2ème étage\, Bât 100\, Campus d'Orsay - 19 Oct 16 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Optimal immune systems\nAleksandra Walczak (LPT-ENS\, Paris)\nN
OTE THE NEW LOCATION (due to renovation work at LPS)\n\nBiological organis
ms have evolved a wide range of complex strategies to defend themselves ag
ainst pathogens. I will present a common evolutionary framework that balan
ces the benefits and costs involved in protection against pathogenic envir
onments to maximize the long growth rate of populations. I will show that
such a general evolutionary perspective recovers the basic forms of known
immunity. I will then focus on adaptive immunity which is based on a combi
natorically encoded repertoire of receptors that protects organisms from a
diverse set of pathogens. A well-adapted repertoire should be tuned to th
e pathogenic environment to reduce the cost of infections. I will discuss
a general approach for predicting the optimal repertoire that minimizes t
he cost of infections contracted from a given distribution of pathogens.\n
