DESCRIPTION:Biological tissues as materials: fluidity\, rigidity and rheolo
 gy\nCristina Marchetti (UCSB\, USA)\nJoint seminar with Institut Curie Ors
 ay. Note the unusual location and time.\n\nOver the last decade there has 
 been growing evidence  that dense biological tissue can spontaneously unde
 rgo transitions between a solid-like rigid state and a fluid-like state. T
 he rheological state of the tissue in turn influences the transmission of 
 mechanical deformations\, which plays a central role in driving developmen
 tal processes\, such as wound healing and morphogenesis\, and tumor progre
 ssion. In this talk I will describe our computational and analytical inves
 tigations of the linear and nonlinear mechanical response of confluent tis
 sue to shear deformations.\n
