SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar: David Head - LPTMS\, salle 201\,
  2ème étage\, Bât 100\, Campus d'Orsay - 30 Nov 16 11:00
DESCRIPTION:High-fidelity computational modelling of biofilms and fibre net
works\nDavid Head (University of Leeds\, UK)\nNOTE THE NEW LOCATION (due t
o renovation work at LPS)\nMathematical models of complex systems can help
develop fundamental insight and accelerate the development of\nnovel mate
rials and therapeutic treatments\, but the simplifications that must neces
sarily be made reduce both\nvalidity and predictability\, even for complex
models that are solved numerically. Here I will describe recent\nresults
in two research streams aimed at developing and validating high-fidelity i
n silico models for biofilms\nand fibre networks\, aiming to reduce the re
alism gap to experimental systems while maintaining sufficient\nperformanc
e to permit solution for times and system sizes of interest. The first is
a bespoke model for biofilms\nin which mechanical relaxation between cells
replaces the "pushing" rules typically used\, and has been applied\nto th
e archetypal biofilm of dental plaque\, revealing insight into long-term e
 cological dynamics not easily\nassayed experimentally. Secondly\, I will d
iscuss dynamic simulations of peptide gels and collagen hydrogel\nscaffold
s\, both having important applications as novel biomaterials but where net
work formation must also be\nsimulated to better approximate the experimen
ts\; reaching realistic time scales is a substantial challenge.
