SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar: Emmanuel Levy - Salle des sémin
 aires du FAST et du LPTMS\, bâtiment Pascal n°530 - 22 Juin 22 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Principles of Protein Assembly\, From Molecules to Cells\nEmman
uel Levy (Weizmann Institute of Science\, Israel)\nLife processes involve
an intricate choreography between tens of millions of protein building blo
cks that form the infrastructure of cells. Recent technological advances h
ave revealed the catalogs of proteins present in various cells and organis
ms. However\, understanding how these protein building-blocks assemble and
work together is an extraordinarily complex task. I will present our work
aimed at addressing this challenge. First\, I will describe how stickines
s\, defined as the chemical propensity of protein surfaces to bind to each
other\, is tuned across entire proteomes to minimize promiscuous interact
ions. Second\, I will show that even single point-mutations changing the s
urface stickiness of homo-oligomeric proteins can trigger their infinite f
olded-state self-assembly. Finally\, I will describe the design of synthet
ic protein condensates with tractable and tunable phase behavior\; and wor
k-in-progress\, on how we are using these condensates to identify genes gl
obally regulating macromolecular self-assembly in cells.
