SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar: Madan Rao - Moyen Amphi\, Buildi
 ng 510\, Université Paris-Saclay Orsay - 9 Mai 16 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Active Composite Cell Surface - local control of clustering and
sorting\nMadan Rao (Raman Research Institute &amp\; National Centre for B
iological Sciences-TIFR\, Bangalore)\n\nThe surface of a living cell needs
to regulate and control its local composition in a variety of contexts su
ch as endocytosis and signalling. We have shown that many cell surface mol
ecules are organised at multiple scales by their coupling to a thin cortic
al actomyosin layer\, which actively drives local cell membrane compositi
on and shape. This includes both transmembrane proteins and lipid anchored
proteins\, such as GPI-anchored proteins. Crucial to this engagement is t
he spontaneous emergence of localized contractile platforms in the 2dim ac
tive cortical fluid. Both the nanoscale clustering and the mesoscale segre
gation display the unique signatures of activity. We have recently recapit
ulated many of these effects in a minimal reconstituted system. I will end
by discussing potential implications of this active composite cell surfac
e for the processing of cellular information.\n
