SUMMARY:Physics-Biology Interface seminar: Martin Michael Müller - Salle d
es séminaires du FAST et du LPTMS\, bâtiment Pascal n°530 - 7 Juin 24 1

DESCRIPTION:Protein-membrane interactions with a twist\nMartin Michael Mül
ler (U. de Lorraine)\n\nTo understand how a biofilament can interact with
a lipid membrane\, mesoscopic models are of particular interest. \nWithin
a framework of elasticity theory and geometry\, two mechanisms have been p
roposed\, which can induce membrane deformations \ndue to a biofilament: t
he Twister and the Darboux torque mechanism [1]. Whereas the Darboux torqu
e mechanism has been shown to \nexplain membrane deformations by a polymer
in several important biological systems\, the Twister mechanism has been
studied more \ncarefully only recently [2]. \n\n\nIn my talk I will discus
s how the Twister mechanism together with numerical simulations can explai
n the membrane translocation \nof botulinium toxins\, which are among the
most powerful toxins produced in nature. The initial deformation of the me
mbrane by \nthe toxin is caused by the presence of local torques arising f
rom asymmetric positions of hydrophobic residues. Different\ntorque distri
butions are observed in the simulations and permit an origin for the mecha
nism opening the membrane to be proposed.\n\n\n\n[1] J. Fierling et al. So
