DESCRIPTION:Fluctuations and response in biological sensory systems\nMassim
 o Vergassola (Institut Pasteur)\nThe statistics of fluctuations in biologi
 cal pathways and its relation to the response to environmental stimuli wil
 l be discussed. We shall specifically focus on bacterial chemotaxis\, wher
 e detailed experiments and reliable models are available. A novel non-inva
 sive experimental method to measure the chemotaxis response will first be 
 presented. By using fluctuation relations\, we then relate appropriate ste
 ady-state correlations to the response of the system to step and ramp stim
 uli of arbitrary amplitudes. That provides a systematic explanation for th
 e observed relation between fluctuations and response and it also reconcil
 es the out-of-equilibrium nature of the dynamics with the apparently stand
 ard form of the fluctuation-dissipation relation.\n
