DESCRIPTION:Probing properties of fluid interfaces at the scale of picolitr
 e droplets and Genetically-encoded interfaces\nSaikat Saha (ENS\, Paris)\n
 The mechanical properties of complex fluid interfaces dictate how the emer
 gent behaviours of\nthe microstructure manifest as functional properties. 
 I will briefly discuss my previous work\non utilising acoustic-driven bubb
 le oscillations to interrogate the broad-spectrum deformation\nbehaviour o
 f complex interfaces. Next\, I will describe my current efforts in develop
 ing an\nexperimental microfluidic framework to characterise interfacial vi
 scoelasticities for picolitre\nvolume droplets\, particularly useful for p
 recious quantities. Fundamentally\, it offers a simple\napproach to probe 
 mechanical properties in regimes of length-scales and time-scales where\ni
 nformation from conventional macroscopic rheometric methods cannot always 
 be\nextrapolated to. Finally\, I will describe our exploratory work on pro
 grammable soft materials\nwherein a system is provided with a synthetic ge
 nome in which all the properties of the soft\nmaterial could virtually be 
 encoded. This combined with cell-free expression of interfacially-\nactive
  proteins enables the control of surface tension and interfacial elasticit
 y at a genetic level.\nIn effect\, it permits a closed system – of fixed
  composition\, with the same starting raw materials\n– to dynamically ev
 olve its own interfacial properties to have autonomous spatio-temporal\nef
 fects. This has allowed us to program dynamic surface tension profiles as 
 well as create fluid\npropulsion at the macroscale\, which to our knowledg
 e\, is the first example of genetically-driven\nsurface tension regulation
