SUMMARY:Physics-Biology Interface seminar: Stefano Villa - Petit Amphi\, Bu
 ilding 510\, Université Paris-Sud Orsay - 19 Fév 26 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Inferring system properties quantifying the dynamics: from coll
oidal dynamics to cell tissues\nStefano Villa (Max-Planck Institut Göttin
gen)\nObserving dynamics at the microscopic scale is a preferential way of
gathering information on the systems under investigation\, ranging from p
assive systems of isolated particles to out-of-equilibrium ones where acti
ve components interact with each other. In this talk\, I will present two
examples that I have explored during my research.\n\nFirst\, I will presen
t results on the thermal dynamics of colloidal particles in the vicinity o
f an air-water interface. The proximity to the interface affects the dynam
ics via boundary conditions. The measured diffusivities dramatically devia
te from the theoretical predictions\, thus revealing the presence of addit
ional agents affecting the colloidal dynamics.\n\nIn a second example\, a
confluent monolayer of epithelial cells is investigated. There\, internal
stresses trigger the formation of 3D structures (‘domes’). Quantitativ
e analysis of cellular dynamics and domes evolution provides a deeper unde
rstanding of the interplay between stresses\, cell motility\, and tissue r
emodeling. This simple in vitro system demonstrated to be a valuable model
for improving our understanding of the relationship between cell migratio
n and morphogenesis in living tissues.\n
