SUMMARY:Séminaire de la Fédération PHYSTAT-SUD : Peter Sollich - IPhT\,
 CEA-Saclay\, salle Itzykson - 18 Mar 13 14:30
DESCRIPTION:Unified study of glass and jamming rheology in soft particle s
 ystems\nPeter Sollich\, King's College London\nAuthors: Atsushi Ikeda\, Lu
dovic Berthier\, and Peter Sollich\nAbstract: We explore numerically the s
hear rheology of soft repulsive particles at large volume fraction. The in
terplay between viscous dissipation and thermal motion results in multiple
rheological regimes encompassing Newtonian\, shear-thinning and yield str
ess regimes near the ‘colloidal’ glass transition when thermal fluctu
ations are important\, crossing over to qualitatively similar regimes near
the ‘jamming’ transition when dissipation dominates. In the crossover
regime\, glass and jamming sectors coexist and give complex flow curves.
Although glass and jamming limits are characterized by similar macroscopi
c flow curves\, we show that they occur over distinct time and stress sca
les and correspond to distinct microscopic dynamics. We propose a simple r
heological model describing the glass to jamming crossover in the flow cu
rves\, and discuss the experimental implications of our results. Time perm
itting a systematic comparison of the model to data for a number of paradi
gmatic experimental systems will be described.
