DESCRIPTION:Optimal structure and parameter learning of Ising models and ca
 libration of the D-Wave quantum computer\nAndrey Lokhov\, Los Alamos Natio
 nal Laboratory\nReconstruction of structure and parameters of a graphical 
 model from binary samples is a problem of practical importance in a variet
 y of disciplines\, ranging from statistical physics and computational biol
 ogy to image processing and machine learning . The focus of the research c
 ommunity shifted towards developing universal reconstruction algorithms wh
 ich are both computationally efficient and require the minimal amount of e
 xpensive data. In this talk\, we introduce a new method\, Interaction Scre
 ening\, which accurately estimates the model parameters using local optimi
 zation problems. We provide mathematical guarantees that the algorithm ach
 ieves perfect graph structure recovery with an information-theoretically o
 ptimal number of samples and outperforms state of the art techniques\, esp
 ecially in the low-temperature regime which is known to be the hardest for
  learning. As an application\, we show how the method can be used for an e
 fficient calibration of the D-Wave quantum computer.
