SUMMARY:Séminaire du LPTMS :Andrey Zelenskiy (LPTMS) - Salle des séminair
 es du FAST et du LPTMS\, bâtiment Pascal n°530 - 2 Déc 25 11:00
DESCRIPTION:From kagome antiferromagnets to self-assembly: anisotropic hier
archy in dense and dilute systems\nAndrey Zelenskiy (LPTMS)\n&nbsp\;\nGeom
etric frustration arises when interactions favour local configurations tha
t are incompatible with the global geometry of the system. To alleviate fr
ustration\, many systems adopt locally suboptimal arrangements\, often lea
ding to the emergence of complex structures and patterns.\nIn this talk\,
I will explore geometric incompatibility in two contrasting systems: magne
tic kagome crystals and solutions of patchy particles. In both cases\, inc
reasing the anisotropy of interactions generates a hierarchy of competiti
ons\, which manifests in the structure of the equilibrium phase.\nIn kago
me magnets with AB-stacked layers\, while anisotropic interactions lower t
he symmetry of the order parameter\, they at the same time induce self-dua
lity mappings between distinct regions of parameter space. These mappings
reveal extended regimes of high frustration\, where even moderate anisotro
py drives a cascade of exotic phases\, including states that simultaneousl
y exhibit both chiral and nematic order.\nBy contrast\, in solutions of an
isotropic particles with short-range interactions\, frustration is often r
elieved through changes in the overall density profile\, which defines the
shape of the aggregate. Drawing analogies with frustrated magnets\, we id
entify the anisotropic hierarchy for generic patchy particles\, and use it
as a design principle for encoding structural features and motifs of self
 -assembled clusters.
