 opose a microscopic magneto-electric model in which the coupling between s
 pins\nand electric dipoles is mediated by lattice distortions. The magnet
 ic sector is described\nby a Heisenberg model coupled directly to the latt
 ice via a standard spin-Peierls term and\nindirectly to the electric dipo
 le variables via the distortion of the surrounding electronic clouds.\nEl
 ectric dipoles are described by Ising variables for simplicity. We show t
 hat the effective\nmagneto-electric coupling which arises due to the inter
 connecting lattice deformations is\nquite efficient in one-dimensional ar
 rays. More precisely\, we show using bosonization and\nextensive DMRG nume
 rical simulations that by increasing the magnetic field above the spin\nP
 eierls gap\, a massive polarization switch-off occurs due to the prolifer
 ation of soliton pairs.\nIntroducing further neighbors couplings and singl
 e ion anisotropy\, the system also shows the\n"uudd" (or so-called antip
 hase) magnetic ordering observed in several type II multiferroic materials
 .\nWe also discuss recent results for a two-dimensional generalization.\n
