SUMMARY:Séminaire du LPTMS: Kay Wiese (LPENS) - Petit amphi\, bâtiment Pa
 scal n° 530 - 18 Jan 22 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Force correlations in disordered systems and this year’s Nobe
 l prize in physics\nKay Wiese (Laboratoire de Physique de l’Ecole Normal
 e Supérieure)\nOnsite + zoom.\n\nZoom link: https://cnrs.zoom.us/j/93731

 Passcode: 4prAN9\nWe study the force-force correlator for disordered elast
 ic systems. We show that each of the relevant universality classes has its
  own function. The nicest experiments are for DNA unzipping and Barkhausen
  noise. For the latter we observe two distinct universality classes\, depe
 nding on the range of spin interactions. In all cases force-force correlat
 ions grow linearly at small distances\, while they are bounded at large di
 stances. As a consequence\, avalanches are anti-correlated\, i.e. reduced
 in size\, at short distances. Our theory is based on the functional renorm
 alization group\, which we compare to an alternative approach\, namely mea
 n-field theory with replica-symmetry breaking. The latter is one of the ke
 y achievements cited in this year’s Nobel prize for Giorgio Parisi. Anot
 her involves super mathematics\, which we use to map charge-density waves
 to loop-erased random walks.\n&nbsp\;
