SUMMARY:Séminaire du LPTMS : Marko Medenjak (LPENS) - LPTMS (100% online s
 eminar) - 25 Mai 21 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Bounds on time translation symmetry breaking \nMarko Medenjak (
 LPENS)\n\nOnline seminar --- Zoom Meeting ID: 951 9908 9593 -- Passcode: a
sk L. Mazza and D. Petrov --\n\nAbstract: Isolated systems consisting of m
any interacting particles are generally\nassumed to relax to a stationary
state\, whose macroscopic properties are\ndescribed by the laws of thermod
ynamics and statistical physics. In this\nseminar we will explore whether
quantum systems can avoid relaxation and\nif stationarity itself can be un
stable\, meaning that even the slightest\ndisturbance of the thermal state
leads to perpetually changing physical\nproperties. Analogous behaviour w
as experimentally observed in driven\nquantum systems (Floquet time crysta
ls)\, in which the response of the\nsystem does not follow the period of t
he driving. We will show that time\ntranslation symmetry breaking is possi
ble even in perfectly isolated\nquantum systems without any driving\, and
provide rigorous bounds on it\nin terms of dynamical symmetries. Finally\,
we will see how time\ntranslation symmetry breaking occurs in the Heisenb
erg XXZ spin chain\,\nand show that its properties are a no-where continuo
 us (fractal)\nfunction of the system parameters.\n\n[1] M. Medenjak\, B. B
