DESCRIPTION:Emergence of global patterns in bacterial growth: from single c
 ells to communities\nSerena Bradde\, City University of New York\nUndersta
 nding how phenomenological behaviors observed in biological systems emerge
  from molecular interactions of many individual units and how these inter
 actions shape the response of living systems to a changing environment are
   challenging questions which lie at the interface between multiple dis
 ciplines.\nIn this talk I will draw an example from the human gut microb
 iome\, the full consortium of microbes living in association with the huma
 n gut. Recent developments in DNA sequencing have made it possible to mon
 itor how the compositions of microbial species change in time.\nAnalysis
  of healthy adults under antibiotic treatment showed that the gut microb
 iota could take several weeks to recover after treatment cessation. This s
 uggests that the combination of inter-species and host-microbe interaction
 s and external perturbations could lead to hysteresis phenomena. \nWe in
 vestigate this possibility and propose an out of equilibrium stochastic mo
 del able to explain this phenomenon in terms of a first-order phase transi
 tion scenario. Our study reveals the importance of noise-activated dynami
 cs in the recovery from antibiotic-perturbed states.  \n
