SUMMARY:Séminaire du LPTMS: Shlomi Reuveni - LPTMS\, salle 201\, 2ème ét
 age\, Bât 100\, Campus d'Orsay - 28 Fév 17 11:00
DESCRIPTION:First Passage Under Restart \nShlomi Reuveni (Department of Sy
 stems Biology\, Harvard Medical School\, Boston)\n\nStopping a process in
its midst—only to start it all over again—may prolong\, leave unchange
d\, or even shorten the time taken for its completion. Among these three p
ossibilities the latter is particularly interesting as it suggests that re
start can be used to expedite the completion of complex processes involvin
g strong elements of chance. This turned out to be important in computer s
cience where restart drastically improves performance of randomized algori
thms\, but is not less relevant to many physical\, chemical\, and biologic
al processes since restart is inherent to the stochastic Michaelis-Menten
reaction scheme and this is ubiquitous throughout the sciences. I will int
roduce the problem of first passage under restart using the example of sim
ple diffusion\, but will then explain why many unknowns compel us to gener
alize to arbitrary first passage processes and restart mechanisms. This ha
s recently led us to discover universal features of the problem which I wi
ll derive and describe\, and the framework developed will also serve to ma
ke the case for a much required paradigm shift in our understanding of enz
ymatic catalysis and inhibition at the single-molecule level.\n\nReference
