SUMMARY:Séminaire du LPTMS: Takahiro Sagawa - LPTMS\, salle 201\, 2ème é
 tage\, Bât 100\, Campus d'Orsay - 26 Oct 12 11:00
DESCRIPTION:Information Thermodynamics in Small Systems\nTakahiro Sagawa\,
Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics\, Kyoto University\nEver since th
e proposal of "Maxwell's demon" in the nineteenth century\, the relationsh
ip between thermodynamics and information has attracted numerous attention
s concerning the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics [1\,2]. T
he demon seems to be able to violate the second law by using the informati
on about the microscopic degrees of freedom of thermodynamic systems. Due
to the recent developments of the experimental technologies of manipulati
ng small thermodynamic systems\, the demon has become a topic of active re
searches both in terms of theory and experiment of nonequilibrium statisti
cal physics. In this seminar\, I'd like to talk about our theoretical and
experimental results on the foundation of the relationship between thermo
dynamics and information [3-6]. Theoretically\, I will focus on the gener
alizations of the second law of thermodynamics to information processing p
rocesses such as measurement and feedback\, in which information contents
and thermodynamic variables are treated on an equal footing. I'd also lik
e to talk about our experimental result\, which has experimentally realize
d a Maxwell's demon that uses the obtained information as a resource of th
e free energy and the work [7].\n\nReferences:\n\n[1] "Maxwell's demon 2:
