SUMMARY:Séminaire exceptionnel du LPTMS: Srikanth H. Sastry - LPTMS\, sall
 e 201\, 2ème étage\, Bât 100\, Campus d'Orsay - 19 Sep 13 14:00
DESCRIPTION:Dynamical transition and memory in cyclically deformed amorphou
 s solids\nSrikanth H. Sastry (TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences\,
Hyderabad)\nAmorphous solids are microscopically disordered materials tha
t arise in diverse contexts\, with polymeric glasses and soft glassy mater
ials like gels and metallic glasses being some typical examples. The mecha
nical response of amorphous solids is distinct in microscopic detail from
that of crystalline solids\, and is of practical interest because of the r
elevance of the elastic and plastic response and rheology of these substan
ces to a variety of processes and applications. A computational investigat
ion of the response of a model amorphous solid to oscillatory deformation
is presented\, after a brief overview of current approaches to understandi
ng mechanical response of amorphous solids. A dynamical transition is obse
rved as the amplitude of the deformation is varied: For large values of th
e amplitude the system exhibits diffusive behavior and loss of memory of t
he initial conditions\, whereas localization is observed for small amplitu
des. The formation of memory in such systems of single and multiple inputs
  is also described.
