 izmann Institute of Science\, Rehovot\nI shall present some new results ob
 tained with Idan Oren on the spectral statistics of permutation matrices o
 f large order. They show curious features which can be explained using cla
 ssical number theory\, modified slightly to be useful for the present appl
 ication. Our result are consistent with the known leading order asymptotic
  expressions\, and add to them the next to leading order corrections.\n
