SUMMARY:Soutenance de thèse Benoit Ferté - LPENS Paris - 17 Sep 26 14:00
DESCRIPTION:Thermalization and emergence of classicality in many-body quant
 um systems\nBenoit Ferté\n&nbsp\;\n\nLieu de la soutenance : LPENS\, 24 r
ue Lhomond 75005 Paris\, salle Conférence 4\n\n\nThe goal of this thesis
is to study how quantum information spreads from a microscopic system to a
macroscopic environment. To do so\, we define the notion of phases of inf
ormation propagation\, which differentiate how much information an observe
r with access to some part of the environment is able to learn on the micr
oscopic system\, a notion close to the concept of objectivity in Quantum D
arwinism. Phase transitions of information are then probed in several solv
able models of expanding quantum circuits\, where\, by tuning the ratio be
tween broadcasting and scrambling of information\, we are able to set obje
ctivity on or off in the system and to recover the behaviour of a function
ing or broken measurement apparatus. In a second part\, this notion of obj
ectivity is compared to the notion of decoherent histories. While these tw
o formalisms both aim at describing the emergence of "classicality" in qua
ntum systems\, we show that they in fact define two different kinds of cla
ssicalities: while the first one is related to the particular micro-to-mac
ro process involved in a quantum measurement\, the second one emerges sole
ly from coarse-graining in macro-systems.\n\n\n\n\n\nJury: Xiangyu Cao (di
