SUMMARY:Tri-séminaire de Physique Statistique : Steven H. Simon - LPTMS-ba
 timent 100\, salle des conseils - 18 Sep 14 14:30
DESCRIPTION:Topological matter and why you should be interested\nSteven H.
Simon\, Oxford University\nIn two dimensional topological phases of matter
\, processes depend on gross topology rather than detailed geometry. Think
ing in 2+1 dimensions\, particle world lines can be interpreted as knots o
r links\, and the amplitude for certain processes becomes a topological in
variant of that link. While sounding rather exotic\, we believe that such
phases of matter not only exist\, but have actually been observed in quant
um Hall experiments\, and could provide a uniquely practical route to buil
ding a quantum computer.   Possibilities have also been proposed for cre
ating similar physics in systems ranging from superfluid helium to stronti
um ruthenate to semiconductor-superconductor junctions to quantum wires to
  spin systems to cold atoms.
