SUMMARY:Physics-Biology interface seminar: Marie-Pierre Valignat - Amphi BL
ANDIN du LPS de la Faculté des Sciences d’Orsay (Bâtiment 510) - 23 Ma
 i 14 14:00
DESCRIPTION:Leukocyte sensing of flow direction\nMarie-Pierre Valignat (Lab
oratoire Adhésion Cellulaire et Inflammation\, Marseille)\nAs they leave
the blood stream and travel to lymph nodes or sites of inflammation\, leuk
ocytes are captured by the endothelium and migrate along the vascular wall
to permissive sites of transmigration. These processes are supposedly orc
hestrated by chemical signals and take place under the influence of a stro
ng hemodynamic shear stress. The role of flow on leukocyte crawling and ex
travasation remains generally an unsolved question\, however crawling T ly
mphocytes were recently reported in vivo and in vitro to orient against th
e direction of flow and to move upstream like salmons in a river. This non
-intuitive behavior is manifestly not a passive drift of cells pushed by t
he flow\, and we sought here to clarify the origin\, role and mechanism of
  this upstream flow mechanotaxis behavior.
