You will find below some information for students interested in complex systems (in the Amsterdam area).
All level — List of courses currently available at UvA and VU:
Courses on Complex Systems or Complexity Science: List for the academic year 2022/23.
Details of the courses can change from year to year (title, period, lecturer, etc.). Please let me know if you see spot any mismatch between this list and the course catalogue of the current academic year.
Don’t hesitate to let me know if you know of other courses we can add to this list. Thank you!
Bachelor students looking for a Master program:
You may be interested in the Master Physics and Astronomy at UvA/VU with a specialization in « Computational Physics of Complex Systems » (CPCS). The program is currently available under the track « General Physics and Astronomy » (GPA).
You can find here is more information on the program, and the list of the courses we recommend to students following the specialization.
You may be interested in the Master Computational Science at UvA/VU, with an application domain in « Complex Systems ». You can find more information about the program here and the possible application domains here (at the bottom of the page).
Master students:
You will find here a list of the courses we recommend to students interested in complex systems: check the application domain « Complex Systems » at the bottom of the page.
The two following courses from physics are also highly recommended:
- « Non-equilibrium statistical physics » by Edan Lerner (3EC);
- « Physics of Complex Systems: Dynamics and Chaos » by Greg Stephens (3EC);
For 2022/23, these two courses will run in parallel during period 1. If you are interested in following only one of these two courses, there is the possibility to do an individual project for 3EC to complete the credits (upon approval by the examination board, see the master’s study program).
You can contact Rick Quax or me if you have any question regarding the application domain « Complex Systems ».
You will find here the list of courses we recommend to students interested in Physics of Complex Systems, as well as a list of the PIs at UvA and VU who can supervise a MSc project in this field (at the bottom of the page).
Do not hesitate to contact Edan Lerner or me if you have more questions regarding education in Computational physics and Physics of Complex Systems at UvA.
