The tremendous progresses in manipulating ultracold atomic gases now allow to perform single site resolved detection of atoms in optical lattices (either in I. Bloch’s group in München, or in M. Greiner’s group in Harvard). This makes accessible observables counting the number of atoms in a given domain. In a first article, we have considered a gas of fermions in a 1D harmonic trap and study the variance of the index (number of fermions on the positive axis), both in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles.
